Brisbane, 25 November 2024 – Tracey Read’s recent presentation at our ‘Bioplastics Research Insights’ event shed light on a critical question: How biodegradable are bioplastics?  In this engaging talk, she shares findings from an ambitious 18-month Epic Field Trial that tested how three common biodegradable plastics—PHA, PBAT, and PLA—break down in real aquatic environments. With over 400 samples exposed to varying conditions like salinity, temperature, and sediment types, the research reveals how material type, manufacturing methods, and environmental factors all influence whether these plastics truly biodegrade or simply fragment.
